In the collapsing Soviet Union, the Petrosian family finds themselves outcasts wherever they go. Their Armenian heritage has led them to be discriminated against, first in their own country, Azerbaijan, and then in Russia. Having found their eternal hope through a church founded by American missionaries, the hostility of everyday life forces them to seek refuge in the United States.
